Stereolepis es un género de peces de la familia Stereolepididae. Fue descrito por el americano William Orville Ayres en 1859.
Sistemática El género Stereolepis fue establecido en 1859 por el ictiólogo estadounidense William Orville Ayres con la descripción original de Stereolepis gigas, su especie tipo,W. O. Ayres: Descriptions of fishes. In: Proceedings of the California Academy of Sciences. (Series 1) V. 2 (1858–1862), 1859, p. 25–32. y permaneció como un género monotípico durante 110 años. En 1969, los ictiólogos rusos Lindberg y Krasyukova describieron una segunda especie, Stereolepis doederleini.G. U. Lindberg, Z. V.
